Leon Ellis – Harlem Restaurateur and Cultural Visionary in NYC
Leon Ellis is a seasoned figure in New York City’s food and hospitality scene, driven by an early passion for cuisine and flavors. He honed his skills by studying food science and nutrition at Tuskegee University in Alabama. After graduating, Leon fulfilled his dream of opening his first restaurant, Emily’s Restaurant and Bar, in 1992, paying homage to his mother. Situated in East Harlem, Emily’s quickly gained acclaim, cementing Harlem’s reputation as a thriving business locale.
Seeking to expand his culinary repertoire, Leon ventured into barbecue with the launch of Oscar’s Famous BBQ, named after his father. This endeavor brought authentic Texas-style barbecue to the heart of Harlem, reflecting Leon’s deep-rooted family values and culinary expertise.
As a proud black entrepreneur in New York, Leon’s exemplary work ethic and community engagement have established him as one of Harlem’s foremost business leaders. His ventures extend beyond hospitality, including MOCA Bar and Grill, a popular lounge known for its trendy atmosphere and extensive drink and appetizer menu.
Furthermore, Leon is the visionary behind Harlem Underground, boasting the largest collection of Harlem USA merchandise nationwide for over two decades. With a focus on custom embroidery and original Harlem designs, Harlem Underground celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the community, both in-store and online.
